Zurich Layover Guide: The Circle in One Hour, the Old Town in Four, the Lake in Six, the Rhine Falls in Eight

A Zurich layover divides cleanly by hours, because the train is so quick that the only real cost is the walk back through security. Under two hours, stay in the terminal or cross to The Circle. Two to four, you can stand on the lakefront. Four to six, you can see the Old Town properly. Six to ten, the Rhine Falls or the Uetliberg are in reach. This guide sets out each tier with the times, the fares and the entry rules, for the non-Schengen transfers first, since they are the ones with passport control on the way out and back.

Before you leave the terminal

Non-Schengen arrivals pass immigration at Arrival 2; EU, EEA and Swiss passports and the visa-waiver nationalities (the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan and others) go through in minutes, travellers who need a Schengen visa cannot leave the transit zone and should use the lounges or the Transit Hotel. Bags checked through on one ticket stay with the airline. Note your return time: back at the airport 90 minutes before a non-Schengen departure and 60 before a Schengen one, then the Skymetro to Dock E takes 10 to 15 minutes from passport control. The left-luggage counter in arrivals holds cabin bags by the day.

One to two hours: The Circle

Cross the covered passage from the bus station to The Circle, five minutes from arrivals: about ten restaurants and cafés, shops, and the park on the slope behind with a 30-minute loop and a view across the airfield to the Alps on a clear day. The Hyatt Regency’s Bar Iris and the Hyatt Place’s 24-hour ZOOM Bar are the places for a drink with a seat; our guide to The Circle has the rest. The terminal’s own observation deck, when open, is the spot for aircraft.

Two to four hours: Bahnhofstrasse and the lake

Take the train from under Check-in 3 to Zürich Hauptbahnhof (10 to 12 minutes, CHF 7.20 for zones 110 and 121, every 10 minutes) and walk down Bahnhofstrasse, the 1.4 km shopping street, to Bürkliplatz on the lake in 20 minutes, past Paradeplatz and the banks. The lakefront, the swans and the view to the Alps are the postcard; a one-hour lake cruise leaves from Bürkliplatz in summer. Back the same way, or take tram 11 to the station.

Four to six hours: the Old Town

Add the Altstadt: from the station cross the Limmat to the Niederdorf lanes on the east bank, then the Grossmünster (climb the tower for the view, CHF 5), cross the Münsterbrücke to the Fraumünster for the Chagall windows, and up to the Lindenhof terrace above the river for the best view of the roofs. Lunch in the Niederdorf or at Zeughauskeller by Paradeplatz, then the train from Stadelhofen or the Hauptbahnhof. Three hours on the ground covers it; a 24-hour ZVV pass for zones 110 and 121 covers the trams.

Six to ten hours: Uetliberg or the Rhine Falls

With six hours, the Uetliberg, Zurich’s own mountain at 870 m, is a 20-minute train (S10) from the Hauptbahnhof and a 10-minute walk to the summit tower, with the city, the lake and the Alps laid out below; it is in the 24-hour pass zones. With eight, the Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen, Europe’s largest waterfall by flow, are about 1 h 06 from the airport by train via Winterthur to Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall, where the station is beside the falls; allow 90 minutes there and the same back, and leave the falls four hours before a non-Schengen departure. The Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg (S-Bahn from the Hauptbahnhof, 15 minutes) is the wet-weather alternative at four hours.

Overnight layovers

An evening arrival and a morning departure is the easiest layover of all because of the curfew: nothing leaves before 6:00 am, so sleep at the Radisson Blu or one of the Hyatts at The Circle and walk back under cover, or save money at the capsule hotel opposite Check-in 1; the sleeping in the airport guide compares them with the airside Transit Hotel, and the connecting guide covers the transfer rules and bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave Zurich Airport during a layover?

If you may enter Switzerland: EU, EEA and Swiss citizens, and nationals of countries with visa-free access to the Schengen area, walk through immigration; Schengen arrivals are already in. Travellers who need a Schengen visa stay airside. Through-checked bags stay with the airline.

How much time do I need to see Zurich?

Four hours of layover gives about two in the city: the train takes 10 to 12 minutes each way, and you should be back at the airport 90 minutes before a non-Schengen departure and 60 before a Schengen one. Six hours gives the Old Town and the lake, eight the Rhine Falls or Uetliberg.

What can I do without leaving the airport area?

Walk the covered passage to The Circle for its restaurants, shops and the park on the hill behind it, with the runway below; it takes five minutes from arrivals. The observation deck on the terminal roof reopens seasonally and the airport's Airport Fitness sells day passes with showers.

Is there luggage storage at Zurich Airport?

Yes, a staffed left-luggage counter and lockers landside in the arrivals area, charged per piece per day; the Capsule Hotel opposite Check-in 1 also stores luggage for guests. Through-checked bags on one ticket do not need collecting.
